You are not hard to fit. You have been given the wrong information.

There have been so many occasions when I've ordered 20 things at once (or sometimes more!). All come from petite ranges. All are in my UK dress size. All are supposedly made for someone exactly like me.

Normally, I keep two - or less.

I am 4'11", and for years I assumed that was the problem. That I was the awkward one and I should be grateful anything fitted at all. I paid for alterations on clothes that should have fitted out of the bag. I kept things that were just OK instead of things that made me feel fantastic. I stood in a lot of changing rooms looking at something that was technically my size and technically made for my height, wondering what was wrong with me.

The reality is that there was nothing wrong with me. The clothes were not actually made for the proportions I actually have. This is the honest truth, and yet there are so many petite women out there who feel like they are just an awkward size or shape.

If you have ever felt like this, or taken four things into a fitting room and come out with none, this guide is the thing I wish someone had handed me a decade ago.

This is not a body shape quiz

You have probably done a few of these by now. I've done about five and between them they told me I was a pear, an inverted triangle and a rectangle, which was quite a range for one body!

But here is the problem with all of them: They ask about width. Where you are widest, where you are narrowest, what shape that makes. Then they hand you a fruit to compare yourself to and tell you what parts of you to hide.

Width is not the thing that breaks petite clothing though, length is. Where your waist sits. How long your torso is relative to your legs. Where a rise lands on you compared to where it was drafted to land. Two women can be the same height, the same dress size and the same shape, and need completely opposite advice, because one has a short torso and one does not.

No body shape quiz has ever asked you about your torso. That is the gap this guide fills.

There are no fruits or household objects in it! Nothing you need to hide, minimise or camouflage. Just what your proportions actually are and what that means for how clothes behave on you.

You do not need a tape measure. You need to read your own wardrobe.

Most guides start by asking you to measure yourself. I am not going to do that, for two reasons.

1. Half of us do not own a tape measure, and;

2. The ones who do have usually had a miserable time with it!

More importantly, measurements tell you about your body. They do not tell you what clothes do to your body, and that is the actual question.

So this works the other way round. Instead of measuring you, it reads the evidence already hanging in your wardrobe. Where things gape. Where they pull. Which alterations you keep paying for. What happens to a shirt that fits your shoulders when it reaches your waist.

Your wardrobe has been collecting this data for years but nobody has ever shown you how to read it.

Try one of the three questions right now

This takes four seconds and you can do it sitting down.

1. Put your hand flat against your side with your fingers facing forward and find the bottom of your ribs.

2. Now find the top of your hip bone.

3. Stack your fingers flat in the gap between them.

* If two or more fingers fit comfortably: your torso runs longer.

* If barely one finger, or none: your torso runs short.

* If you are somewhere in between: your torso runs average.

Now the part that matters.

If your torso runs short, the advice you have been given your entire adult life has been wrong for you. High-waisted is the universal petite recommendation in almost every list, article and from every shop assistant. On a short torso it takes the shortest part of you and shortens it further, which is why high-waisted trousers so often feel like they are sitting somewhere under your bust and why you have quietly assumed you just cannot wear them.

You can. Not all of them, and not the way you have been told.

That is one question of three. The other two cover your height band and where your proportions sit across your frame.

The guide walks you through all three, explains what each answer means, and gives you a single line that describes your proportions. That line is what you check before you order, and it is what will match you to women built like you when Petite Hive opens.

What is actually in The Proportion Profile Guide?

15 pages. Only about 10 minutes to read, but less if you skip to your own profile, which is what I would do. And three questions, with clear instructions and no measuring.

The result: what your torso answer means, including which of the standard petite rules to you can ignore, and why.

The five proportion profiles: Shoulder-Led, Hip-Led, Centre-Led, Even-Set and Waist-Defined. What each one means for how garments behave, what it means when you shop, and where garments usually fail you. No rules, no fruit, nothing about looking taller or slimmer.

Your profile written out in one line, so you have language for it. Mine is 4'11", Short Torso, Shoulder-Led. Once you can say yours, shopping gets easier immediately, and so does asking other people for advice.

What to do with it next.

Who wrote this?

Hi, I'm Alisha and as you might have already guessed, I'm 4'11" and have been this height since I was probably about 13! As a fellow petite, I have spent more time than I'd like to admit in fitting rooms doing sums about hem lengths.

By day, I'm also a procurement professional, with over eight years experience, including new product development and supplier management. That part actually matters more than you might think. My job is the bit of the process that is rarely seen by the consumer: how a specification gets written, how a supplier reads it, how a decision made in a sourcing meeting 18 months ago becomes the trousers that do not fit you today.

So when a petite range is made by taking a standard block and shortening it, I know exactly why that happened, and it is not because anyone is ignoring us. It is because nobody has ever given the industry proportion-level information to work from. I have lived the changing room and I have sat in the sourcing meeting. Petite Hive is what happens when those two things meet.

This started as a post that reached thousands of women. Most of them said a version of the same thing.

Finding your fit is half of it

The other half is finding the women who are built like you.

Right now, if you want to know whether something works on a 4'11" short-torso frame, your options are a review from someone 5'8" or a size guide written by someone who has never had this problem. That is what Petite Hive is being built to fix, and it only works if enough of us turn up and tell the truth about what actually fitted.

That is what the Hive is. Not a brand talking at you. A few thousand of us finally comparing notes properly.

If you want a preview of what that looks like, it is already happening in my comments. @petitehive on TikTok and Instagram.

What you might be wondering

Is this just another body shape quiz?

No, and I say that as someone who has done five of them. Body shape quizzes ask about width and hand you a fruit. This starts with height and torso length, which is what actually breaks petite clothing, and no body shape quiz has ever asked you about your torso.

I already know I am short. What is this going to tell me?

That height is the first question, not the only one. Two women who are both 5'1" can need completely opposite advice depending on their torso length, and one of them has been following rules written for the other her whole life.

Do I need to measure myself?

No. There is no tape measure anywhere in this. The whole thing works by reading how garments behave on you, which you already know without realising it.

Is it actually free, or is there a catch at the end?

Actually free. No upsell, no course, no discount code, nothing to buy at the end. The Proportion Profile stays free permanently when the platform launches too. Petite Hive will make money one day from working with the industry, not from charging petite women to find out how their own bodies work.

Am I going to get spammed?

You will get one email to confirm, then the guide. After that, occasional updates as Petite Hive gets built, and nothing daily. Unsubscribe in one click whenever you like and I will not take it personally.

What Petite Hive will never do

No paywalled community. No affiliate links dressed up as recommendations. No selling your data to anyone. No brand paying to be reviewed well. I have written those down publicly so you can hold me to them.

Send me the guide

Pop your email in and it arrives in a couple of minutes. You will get one email asking you to confirm, because that is the honest way to run a mailing list, then the guide itself.

Check your inbox

There is one email waiting for you. Click the button in it to confirm, and your guide arrives about a minute later. If it is not there in five minutes, have a look in promotions or spam, because that is usually where it hides.

While you wait, the Hive is already on TikTok and Instagram. It is mostly me trying things on and telling the truth about them, and a comments section full of women going oh, so it is not just me.
